You might think I was living under a rock, and maybe I was, but I had no idea who Mathangi Maya Arulpragasam aka M.I.A. was until she collaborated with Madonna on the "MDNA" album. So here is a story again of me discovering yet another amazing artist thanks to Madonna.
I hadn't even really paid attention to whom Madonna collaborated with on the MDNA album and kind of discovered M.I.A. by myself a bit later, and I honestly can't remember how. Maybe I googled her at some point for some reason, and interestingly, I became a M.I.A. fan the same way I became a Madonna fan: by reading the story of her life before I even knew what kind of music she was doing.
I've been into M.I.A. for a while now and had the chance to meet her in person at the launch of her "M.I.A." book in New York at the Moma PS1 last year. M.I.A. is releasing a long awaited album called "Matangi" on November 5, 2013, and was promoting it last night at Terminal 5.
Currently being stuck in France, I couldn't be in New York and missed this show. Fortunately for me my best friend Jeannie was able to go, and took amazing pictures and video footage. I have never seen M.I.A. performing, so I was curious to hear what my friend had to say about her show. I'm beyond happy to learn that Maya didn't disappoint! Here is what Jeannie from madonnasworld.com had to say about last night's show:
"I definitely have new found respect for her, she has an amazing energy, stage presence and is real. I loved the moment when she held my hand so she wouldn't fall off the barricade on top of me, that was pretty intense and it felt like it lasted at least 3 minutes! I almost died at this concert! Mia jumped on top of the barricade on top of me and was leaning in, falling over, holding my hand, and nearly broke my neck, lmao!" - Jeannie
