M.I.A. Live at Terminal 5, NYC, Nov. 1st, 2013 to promote the release of her new album "Matangi"11/2/2013 ![]() You might think I was living under a rock, and maybe I was, but I had no idea who Mathangi Maya Arulpragasam aka M.I.A. was until she collaborated with Madonna on the "MDNA" album. So here is a story again of me discovering yet another amazing artist thanks to Madonna. I hadn't even really paid attention to whom Madonna collaborated with on the MDNA album and kind of discovered M.I.A. by myself a bit later, and I honestly can't remember how. Maybe I googled her at some point for some reason, and interestingly, I became a M.I.A. fan the same way I became a Madonna fan: by reading the story of her life before I even knew what kind of music she was doing. I've been into M.I.A. for a while now and had the chance to meet her in person at the launch of her "M.I.A." book in New York at the Moma PS1 last year. M.I.A. is releasing a long awaited album called "Matangi" on November 5, 2013, and was promoting it last night at Terminal 5. Currently being stuck in France, I couldn't be in New York and missed this show. Fortunately for me my best friend Jeannie was able to go, and took amazing pictures and video footage. I have never seen M.I.A. performing, so I was curious to hear what my friend had to say about her show. I'm beyond happy to learn that Maya didn't disappoint! Here is what Jeannie from madonnasworld.com had to say about last night's show: "I definitely have new found respect for her, she has an amazing energy, stage presence and is real. I loved the moment when she held my hand so she wouldn't fall off the barricade on top of me, that was pretty intense and it felt like it lasted at least 3 minutes! I almost died at this concert! Mia jumped on top of the barricade on top of me and was leaning in, falling over, holding my hand, and nearly broke my neck, lmao!" - Jeannie I was fortunate to attend the Grand Opening of the very first Hard Candy Fitness gym in Germany, and here's my report of the event. Day #1 - October 16, 2013: Auditions A few lucky fans and dancers had been selected through the official Hard Candy Fitness Berlin website. In order to have a chance to audition, you had to enter your name online and if you were lucky, your name was drawn and you were contacted by phone. My friends Nina and Ally, with whom I traveled to Berlin, were picked. I wasn't, but showed up anyway and the fitness center kindly let me audition. I had done the New York auditions in June not knowing what to expect, but this time I had trained with Nicole Winhoffer's DVDs and gone back to my normal fitness routine, so I was more prepared. I was selected at the first round, but not at the second one. The final winners were mostly professional (hard candy) fitness dancers and knew their stuff! It was fun to audition in any case. Besides, we were offered Hard Candy Fitness shirts! It was nice to be inside the gym and see all those pics of Madonna on the walls. I wish there was a Hard Candy gym close to where I live, I'd definitely be a hardcore member! Day #2 - October 17, 2013: Grand Opening
The next day, the winners trained for 6 hours with the American team (that was doing the auditions the previous day.) We fans showed up early in the morning and spent the day in a cold yet sunny weather. It didn't rain until shortly before Madonna arrived. The German crew in charge of security and of setting up the decors was pretty friendly and did its best to avoid drama. We were given wristbands around noon so we could leave and come back at 3:30 when the barricades would open, but obviously no one went away. The group of fans was surprisingly small (about 30 people.) A few of the photos that will be published in the magazine were finally revealed today. I couldn't believe my eyes. The photos are so stylish, and Madonna is fierce and gorgeous. These shots are so inspiring. I just had to post them here even if I don't have the high quality files yet. I do hope we have HQs soon and with a bit of luck, a series of outtakes!
Click here to read her essay - a really unique piece of literature where she explains why she did what she did in the past 10 years, what New York means to her, and why it is important to be daring. Here's another set of gorgeous photos of Lola by young New York photographer Amira Rosenbush. This set was taken in June 2013, a month after the first set. It looks like they were taken at Madonna's house. I've zipped the photos for you to download them in one click below. ![]()
These photos of Lola by Amira Rosenberg are simply gorgeous. My favorites are the outdoor ones, the green background with Lola's green hair is a great association of colors. Watch them all in this gallery, and download them all in one click! ![]()
