I can't tell how excited I was to be present at the taping! Never on earth did I believe I'd get in, but determination pays off, and I am beyond grateful to the people who kindly added an extra chair for me in the showroom that was full.
The interview lasted a bit more than an hour. It was delightful to be able to just stare at Madonna for all that time! She looked absolutely gorgeous: her outfit consisted of a leather dress and leather boots. She was also wearing elegant gold jewelry. She had bruises on her legs, which suggested she had been rehearsing for a killer show for the Super Bowl!
She was asked about the Super Bowl performance (she is set to perform the half time show on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis), and explained that she was super-nervous about it. She said something like: "The Super Bowl is the greatest show, and here I am trying to put on the best show in the middle of a show that's already the best."
She added that the Super Bowl show will last 12 minutes, which is a very short time. I wonder how she'll manage to perform all five songs (Gimme All You Lovin, Ray of Light, Vogue, Music, Holiday, according to madonnarama.com.)
Most of the interview was W./E. oriented. The audience had seen the movie in the morning before the taping of the show (taping started around 1:20) and asked her questions about it. Andrea Riseborough joined Madonna on stage after the first 20 minutes if I remember well, and talked about the first time she met Madonna. Madonna said she knew Andrea was the perfect actress to portray Wallis right from the first time she saw her - "She had black hair when I first met her", remembered Madonna, who then added Andrea should be the one to be called the Queen of Re-Invention because she always changed her hair. Then Madonna sang a few song she claimed the crew would sing to pass time on set.
When asked if she kept some of the jewelry used in the movie, Madonna said she had asked to keep some pieces she liked, but Cartier refused and requested everything to be returned. Anderson exclaimed: "how can you say "no" to Madonna?!", she was like, "I'm not God!"
Anderson asked her if she'd give up everything for love, and she immediately replied "absolutely!" but quickly added, "what is everything? I wouldn't give up my Blackberry."
She was very comfortable and quite relaxed. She was pretty enthusiastic and replied to everybody's questions with wordy answers. She really paid attention to everything that was being said and asked. She was always very polite and always carefully chose her words.
Anderson asked her if she'd give up everything for love, and she immediately replied "absolutely!" but quickly added, "what is everything? I wouldn't give up my Blackberry."
One of the question I had submitted on Anderson's website appeared on the screens he was using to interview Madonna, but he didn't get to ask her the question. I was glad to see it had been selected though!
Anderson then mentioned the birthday kiss to Nicky Minaj. Madonna acted like she was embarrassed but admitted she did kiss her, after she had had a few glasses of champagne, because it was Nicky's birthday. Anderson joked and asked if it was anyone's birthday, so Madonna could give them a kiss. As a matter of fact is was the birthday of my friend Venny who was seating in the audience - I wish she'd have given him a birthday kiss!
She then talked about growing up without a mother and explained how it affected her as a mother herself. She explained she tried to turn a lot of people into her mother throughout her life and that she now is the mother she wished she had have. A woman in the audience asked her for advice on adopting children and Madonna very kindly explained the steps to follow, she was so nice, and emphasized how difficult the adoption procedure was. When asked why she adopted two kids from Malawi, she replied that she's lived a privileged life and she is aware of it. She wanted to give children living in "abject poverty" (her words) the chance to have a better life.
During a break she told Anderson she really liked his costume because it fits his eye color. Then they started chatting about eyes and Madonna told him people with light eye colors like him and her tend to become blind more easily. She was so serious about it, she said she "talked to people" about it, that she has a lot of "ophthalmologist friends" and this it was real. She was so funny!
I'm not going to reveal everything here, but it was a great show, with a beautiful Madonna, sexy as always, smiling, and willing to share.
I have this funny story also about her publicist, Liz, who couldn't get in, she was asked to join the stand-by line, she looked so upset when she was told that! She was wearing cats ears on her head and awful pink slippers - so obviously when she said she was Madonna's publicist people were suspicious. I saw how frustrated she was to have to wait to get in the elevator, so I smiled at her to make her feel better (she was standing right next to me) but she wouldn't return my smile when she met my gaze and ignore everyone. Wished she'd take Yoga classes!
